To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many successful prosecutions there have been in the last 10 years for breaches of the regulations on the wearing of seat belts in cars.

Findings of guilt at magistrates courts for not wearing a seat belt in England and Wales are shown in the following table. From 1 October 1986, the police have been able to issue fixed penalty notices for these offences as an alternative to prosecution and estimates of the number of such notices are also shown.
