Mr. Cousins

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will make it his policy that the transport by air of radioactive materials and waste from nuclear installations should not take place over the north-east of England.

No: there are no safety reasons for adopting a policy of avoiding such transport over particular areas of the United Kingdom.

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will list the current regulations which govern(a) the transport of radioactive material and (b) the movement by air of radioactive waste from nuclear installations.

The regulations governing the safe transport of radioactive material by all modes are:

Internationally recommended regulations International Atomic Energy Agency's Safety Series No. 6: Regulations for the Safe Transport of Radioactive Materials 1985 Edition (As Amended 1990).
