To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many people over the age of 60 years began employment in each Government Department in 1992.

Mr. Portillo

Approximately 150 people aged 60 and over began employment in the non-industrial home civil service during the period 1 January to 30 September 1992. Information for the final quarter of the year is not yet available.

Details of the numbers recruited into individual Departments could not be obtained without disproportionate cost.
