HC Deb 01 February 1993 vol 218 cc19-20W
Mr. Steinberg

To ask the Secretary of State for Education how many teachers have left the profession in each year since 1982.

Mr. Forth

The table shows the numbers of teachers who left full-time service in the maintained nursery, primary and secondary schools sector in England and Wales in each year. They include retirements and teachers who transferred to other sectors (such as independent schools, special education or further education) or to part-time teaching. In addition, many of those who leave service each year return to teaching after a career break. Surveys of teacher resignations carried out by the Local Government Management Board show that fewer than 1 per cent. of teachers annually leave teaching to take up other employment.

1 Total of expenditure supported by education support grants and LEA training grants. Figures include both grants and LEA contribution.

2 Real terms figures are at 1992–93 prices, repriced using the GDP (market prices) deflator index.
