HC Deb 01 February 1993 vol 218 cc52-3W
Mr. Bowis

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what assessment he has made of the need for a public alert system to warn the public of emergencies and disasters; and what system is to be installed following the dismantlement of the siren system.

Mr. Peter Lloyd

Future national arrangements for warning the public will be based on the use of television and radio broadcasts. Local arrangements are the responsibility of the authorities in the areas concerned. Home Office officials are holding discussions with local authorities in whose areas the siren system formed part of local warning arrangements.
