To ask the Parliamentary Secretary, Lord Chancellor's Department what representations he has received on his proposed changes to legal aid entitlement; and what were the proportions in favour and against these proposals.

The Lord Chancellor and I have received a number of such representations, the majority of which are opposed to the proposals.

To ask the Parliamentary Secretary, Lord Chancellor's Department what is his current estimate of expenditure on legal aid in the Greater London area for the financial year 1992–93.

It is estimated that net legal aid expenditure in the Greater London area in 1992–93 will amount to £245 million.

Net expenditure on legal aid for the current year is expected to be £1,107.0 million. Net expenditure incurred five, 10 and 15 years ago, at current prices, is as follows.
