HL Deb 01 February 1993 vol 542 c5WA
Lord Molloy

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What steps will be taken to defend the haven for Kurdish people in Iraq as was promised by the Prime Minister.

The Minister of State, Foreign and Commonwealth Office (Baroness Chalker of Wallasey)

We will continue to do all we can to ensure that the Iraqi regime comply with United Nations Security Council resolution 688 which called on Iraq to cease immediately the repression of its own civilian population. As a contribution to this we will maintain an air-exclusion zone over northern Iraq as long as it is necessary for allied forces to monitor the security of the population of northern Iraq.
