HC Deb 01 February 1993 vol 218 cc75-6W
30. Mr. Corbyn

To ask the right hon. Member for Selby, as representing the Church Commissioners what consideration is given to the use of church buildings for the use of other denominations, cultural or social housing before disposal is decided upon in the open market.

Mr. Alison

When a Church of England church is closed for regular public worship, it first becomes the duty of a committee of the diocese to seek a suitable alternative use for the redundant building. These committees are prepared to consider uses along the lines advocated by the hon. Member and there are, indeed, many examples where redundant churches have been put to such uses.
