HC Deb 17 December 1993 vol 234 c1004W
Mrs. Anne Campbell

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what was the spending on research and development in each of the last five years given in 1992–93 prices in her Department.

Dr. Mawhinney

The information is as follows:

£ million
1988–89 64.2
1989–90 69.4
1990–91 78.5
1991–92 160.8
1992–93 259.3
1 The reduction in expenditure between 1990–91 and 1991–92 can be attributed to the termination of the locally organised research scheme (LORS) in 1991. LORS was a programme of research commissioned locally but funded directly by DH. The research work of LORS has continued at a local level.
The reduction in expenditure, when adjusted to 1992–93 prices, between 1991–92 and 1992–93 can be principally attributed to a reduction in expenditure by the National Blood Authority—formerly the Central Blood Laboratories—from £6.2 million to £1.1 million.
2 Estimate.

These figures do not include expenditure which supports research-related activities in special health authorities and national health service hospitals. The total of NHS research and research-related expenditure is estimated currently at £320 million. Further information is available in "Research for Health", copies of which are available in the Library.
