HC Deb 17 December 1993 vol 234 c984W
Dr. Lynne Jones

To ask the President of the Board of Trade if he will introduce legislation to control the sale of radio scanners.

Mr. McLoughlin

Sir David Calcutt, in his review of press self-regulation, Cm 2135, recommended that the Government should give further consideration to the legislation covering interception of telecommunications with a view to identifying all significant gaps and determining whether further legislation is needed. The Government have accepted this recommendation in principle and are looking again at the details of the relevant legislation covering the use of radio equipment, such as scanners, which might be used to intercept communications. But we have no plans to place further restrictions on the sale of scanning receivers.
