HC Deb 17 December 1993 vol 234 c1081W
Mr. Straw

To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster what record is kept of the number of individuals who hold multiple positions on public bodies: and what is the policy in respect of their remuneration.

Mr. Waldegrave

Responsibility for the 42,000 appointments to public bodies rests with individual Ministers and their Departments. No central record is kept of those appointed.

The majority of public appointments are part time and unpaid. Those which are paid are the more senior public appointments which place greater demands on the individual, in terms of the size of the task and the time commitment. The remuneration for such appointments recognises this, and the Cabinet Office "Guide on Public Appointments Procedures" makes clear that in setting remuneration appropriate account should be taken of any existing paid public appointments.
