§ Mr. SackvilleThe directorate is responsible for ensuring that medical devices and equipment for sale or use in the United Kingdom meet acceptable standards of safety, quality and effectiveness and that these standards comply with relevant European Community directives. It is responsible for evaluation of medical devices and for good manufacturing practice standards in the field of medical devices.
The estimated cost of staff in the medical devices directorate for 1993–94, excluding temporary appointments, is £4.93 million. The whole-time equivalent number of staff, by grade, working in the directorate on 1 December 1993, excluding temporary appointments, was one grade 4; two grade 5; two senior medical officers; six grade 6; one nursing officer; three grade 7; 20.5 principal professional and technical officers; four senior executive officers; 44 senior professional and technical officers; one pharmaceutical officer 1; five higher executive officers; 25.5 higher professional and technical officers; one administration trainee; 17 executive officers; two professional and technical officers; 20 administrative officers; five administrative assistants; two senior personal secretaries; 6.5 personal secretaries.
