HC Deb 17 December 1993 vol 234 cc968-9W
Mr. Burns

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer, what was the number of staff in post in central Departments at 1 October.

Mr. Portillo

On 1 October 1993 there were 546,339 permanent staff in post in central Government, the lowest number in the post-war period. This is a decrease of 21,500 in the last year, the largest 12-monthly fall since January 1986.

Of the total staff in post, 497,783 were non-industrials and 48,556 were classified as being in industrial work. A summary staff in post by Department has been placed in the Library.
