To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what proportion of stock exchange turnover by value is accounted for by American depositary receipts in United Kingdom companies.

In the first 11 months of 1993, turnover on the London stock exchange in American depositary receipts in UK companies was £22.9 billion. Total turnover in United Kingdom equities on the London stock exchange, including ADRs, was £508.2 billion. ADRs therefore represented 4.5 per cent of the London stock exchange's total turnover.
