§ Mr. Janner
To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security what estimate he has made of the cost of unemployment benefit in the next 12 months; and what was the cost in 1979.

§ Mr. Burt
The estimated cost of unemployment benefit for 1994–95 is given in table 1 of the social security departmental report as £1.9 billion.
The cost of unemployment benefit in 1979–80 was £653 million.
