Our decision to add £1.30 a week to the single pension and £1.85 a week to the couples pension by April 1996 to help with fuel bills has been widely welcomed.

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is his latest estimate of the amount which will be raised in a full year by the imposition of VAT on fuel.

VAT on fuel and power is estimated to raise £2,850 million in 1996–97, the first full year of revenue.
