  1. 1. The Department of Social Security did not exist independently prior to August 1988.
  2. 2. These figures include advertising on behalf of the Department's HQ and executive agencies other than the Benefits Agency (BA). The projected expenditure in 1993–94 for BA is £670,734. A monthly breakdown of this figure is not available. Figures for previous years since 1991–92 (when the agency took over responsibility for expenditure in this area) are not available and could be obtained only at disproportionate cost.
