Mr. Morgan

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security what was the total expenditure by his Department on administration in 1992–93; what is the estimated outturn for expenditure by his Department on administration for 1993–94 in (i) cash terms and (ii) real terms in 1992–93 prices; and what is his estimate for expenditure on administration by his Department for 1994–95 in(a) cash terms and (b) 1992–93 prices.

The information is as follows:

  1. (i) The final outturn for the recurrent costs of running the Department in 1992–93 is £3,741 million.
  2. (ii) The estimated outturn for 1993–94 is £4,118 million or £3,988 million at 1992–93 prices.
  3. (iii) The Department's planned administration expenditure for 1994–95 is £4,023 million or £3,747 million at 1992–93 prices.

Notes: The figures at 1992–93 prices were calculated by using the GDP deflator. The figures do not include the subsidy given in respect. of work carried out by local authorities. The figues in (iii) were agreed in the 1993 Public Expenditure Survey. These will be published in the 1994 Departmental Report, but, in the meantime, may need to be revised to take into account any subsequent transfers.
