Mr. Stott

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many apprentices entered training in colleges of further education in Northern Ireland in(a) 1990, (b) 1991, (c) 1992 and (d) 1993; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Atkins

Responsibility for the subject in question has been delegated to the Training and Employment Agency under its chief executive, Mr. J. S. Crozier. I have asked him to arrange for a reply to be given.

Letter from Mr. J. Crozier to Mr Roger Stott, dated 14 May: You asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many apprentices entered training in Colleges of Further Education in Northern Ireland in each of the years from 1990 to 1993. As Chief Executive of the Training and Employment Agency, which is responsible for the training and employment functions of Government in Northern Ireland, I have been asked to reply. We have interpreted the word "apprentices" in your question to mean young people attracting skill level funding towards national vocational qualification (NVQ) level 3 in the youth training programme (YTP) who attend further education Colleges (FECs). The table shows the number of YTP trainees attracting skill level funding who were pursuing NVQ level 3 courses together with the total number of YTP trainees in further education colleges for the years 1990–91 to 1993–94 (to 31 October 1993).

YTP trainees pursuing NVQ Level 3 courses and total YTP trainees in FECs
Year end at 31 March Trainees at NVQ Level 3 Total number of YTP trainees in FECs
1990–91 1,009 4,626
1991–92 1,088 4,685
1992–93 1,208 4,579
1993–941 1,174 4,028
1 At 31 October 1993.
I hope this is helpful.
