To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what percentage of projects undertaken by the Transport Research Laboratory in Crowthorne were instigated by direct commercial or industrial demand in 1980, 1990 and 1993.

Percentage of projects undertaken on a commercial basis by the Transport Research Laboratory.1979–80 No records but probably 0 per cent. as TRL's resources were fully committed to DOT and ODA. 1989–90 5 per cent. of projects—40 projects—producing 2 per cent. of income—£600,000. 1992–93 21 per cent. of projects—150 projects—producing 5 per cent. of income—Key£2 million.
