HL Deb 14 December 1993 vol 550 cc108-9WA
Lord Kennet

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether, given that the Commander-in-Chief United Nations Forces in South Korea is a United States general who is also Commander-in-Chief US Forces in South Korea and is also in command of South Korean Forces, the USA has reported on its current activies (including recent military exercises simulating on attack on the Korean coastline) to the UN Security Council, and if not whether they will invite the USA to do so.

Baroness Chalker of Wallasey

The Commander in Chief UN Forces is only in command of South Korean forces in respect of actions relating to the maintenance of the armistice signed in 1953. The United Nations command does not carry out training exercises in the Republic of Korea.

We shall not invite the US to report to the United Nations Security Council on a military exercise carried out under a bilateral defence agreement.
