To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many(a) male and (b) female prison inmates held in prisons in England and Wales were over the age of 80 years as of 1 December.

Responsibility for this matter has been delegated to the Director General of the Prison Service, who has been asked to arrange for a reply to be given.

The lastest available information is for 31 October 1993. On that date there were four inmates (all of whom were male) aged over 80 in Prison Service establishments in England and Wales.
