HL Deb 13 December 1993 vol 550 cc92-3WA
Baroness Strange

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether it is still their policy that cars belonging to British servicemen serving in Germany should have German registration plates; and, if so, when that policy will be fully implemented.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Ministry of Defence (Viscount Cranborne)

For safety and security reasons, Service personnel in Germany are strongly encouraged to use left-hand cars with German registration plates. The percentage of personnel using German registration plates has increased since the facility was first offered in 1989 and action to increase this percentage further is taken whenever appropriate. It is, however, up to the individual to decide whether to drive a right-or left-hand drive car. If the individual decides to drive a right-hand drive car, British style number plates are used, as German plates would afford no protection against the terrorist threat.
