To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food how many calls have been made to the helpline unit since 24 May; and if she will make a statement.

Since its launch on 24 May, the helpline has quickly established itself as a central contact point on a broad range of Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food activities.

In its first six months the helpline unit has received over 14,000 calls.

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food whether she proposes to introduce any new measures dealing with food hygiene matters.

Mr. Soames

The European Community single market hygiene measures for specific sectors, such as milk and milk products and meat products, are at various stages of implementation into our national law.

My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Health is responsible for general food hygiene legislation, where it is planned to introduce next year new regulations to implement the hygiene of foodstuffs directive.
