The Home Secretary has asked me, in the absence of the Director General from the office, to reply to your recent Question about the number of inmates serving life sentences being detained in any open Prison Service establishment.On 31 October 1993, the latest date for which information is available, there were 274 life sentence prisoners detained in open Prison Service establishments in England and Wales.
