To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how many press and publicity officers are currently employed in his Department; and how many were employed in(a) 1985 and (b)

The number of staff in the Information Officer grades employed, at present, in the Scottish Office information directorate is 30.5 with one vacant post. The comparable figures are 19 staff and one vacant post in 1985 and 22 staff and three vacant posts in 1979, both as at 1 April.

Figures in the form requested are not available for 1979–80 to 1987–88. Total expenditure on information publicity for 1979–80 was £263,000 and in 1984–85 £704,000.
