HC Deb 07 December 1993 vol 234 c167W
Mr. Vaz

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what consideration he has given to the need for a nationally co-ordinated emergency warning system; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Peter Lloyd

After a review of the civil defence arrangements in the United Kingdom, it was announced on 12 November 1992 that the obsolescent national siren warning system was to be closed down and that future national arrangements for warning the public should be based on the use of radio and television broadcasts. Work is in hand for the new system.
