HC Deb 07 December 1993 vol 234 c129W
Mr. Vaz

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will list for each civil service grade in his Department(a) the total number of people employed, (b) the total number of black people and (c) the total number of Asians.

Mr. Goodlad

As at 1 April 1993, the number of persons employed in each grade level (ie including equivalent grades) within the Department (including agencies) and the number of those who had classified themselves as being black people and as being Asian were:

Total staff at grade level Total classified as black people Total classified as Asians
Grades 1-4 167
Grade 5 370 1 1
Grade 6 123 1
Grade 7 865 2
Senior executive officer 676 3 4
Higher executive officer 1,511 3 11
Executive officer 2,736 14 28
Adminstrative officer/Administrative assistant 3,329 105 71
Industrial staff 63 1 2

These figures exclude staff who have classified themselves as being of other ethnic origin. There is no compulsion on staff to report their ethnic origin; the response rate for the staff in this answer is about 80 per cent.
