To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security how much of his Department's budget is used in social security payments connected with injuries sustained(a) in war and (b) at work.

Mr. Scott

In 1991-92, the latest year for which final figures are available, benefit expenditure on war disablement and war widows pensions totalled £842 million. This represented 1.4 per cent. of the Department's total benefit spending of £61,819 million.

In the same year, expenditure on industrial injuries disablement and death benefits totalled £655 million, or 1.1 per cent. of the Department's total spending.
