HC Deb 06 December 1993 vol 234 cc98-9W
Dr. Godman

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what new money is to be made available for(a) the construction of new prisons and (b) the renovation of existing prisons; and if he will make a statement.

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

[holding answer 2 December 1993]: There are no plans for the construction of any new prison establishment in Scotland. However, planning is being taken forward for the provision of a new 50 prisoner place houseblock at HM prison, Greenock. Subject to planning consent and other necessary approvals, construction work is provisionally scheduled to start in the latter part of 1994-95.

The estates strategy for the service is contained at chapter 9 of, and annex B to, the Scottish Prison Service corporate plan, a copy of which was deposited in the Library in August this year.
