Mr. Llew Smith

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, pursuant to his oral answer to the hon. Member for Southwark and Bermondsey (Mr. Hughes) of 23 November 1993,Official Report,column 318, if he will set out the basis for his statement that it would take considerable expense and difficulty for plutonium arising from the thermal oxide reprocessing plant to be used in nuclear weapons.

For reasons of national security it would be inappropriate for me to comment further on how to construct a nuclear device, or on the usefulness of various materials in making a nuclear device.
