HC Deb 06 December 1993 vol 234 c10W
Mr. Llew Smith

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment how many combined heat and power plants are in operation in Wales; how many of these are of the combined-cycle type; and what proportion of delivered energy is provided by the plants.

Mr. Yeo

Latest estimates suggest there are now 59 combined heat and power—CHP—sites in Wales with a total installed capacity of approximately 190 MWe. Of these, none is believed to be of the combined-cycle type. It is estimated that, in 1992, on-site electricity generation from CHP plants in Wales was approximately 1,000 GWh. In addition to this, sales of electricity to consumers in Wales totalled 16,400 GWh. Therefore, over 5 per cent of electricity used in Wales is provided by CHP.

On a national level, CHP meets about 4 per cent. of United Kingdom electricity demand.
