§ Mr. Llew SmithTo ask the Secretary of State for the Environment how many combined heat and power plants are in operation in Wales; how many of these are of the combined-cycle type; and what proportion of delivered energy is provided by the plants.
§ Mr. YeoLatest estimates suggest there are now 59 combined heat and power—CHP—sites in Wales with a total installed capacity of approximately 190 MWe. Of these, none is believed to be of the combined-cycle type. It is estimated that, in 1992, on-site electricity generation from CHP plants in Wales was approximately 1,000 GWh. In addition to this, sales of electricity to consumers in Wales totalled 16,400 GWh. Therefore, over 5 per cent of electricity used in Wales is provided by CHP.
On a national level, CHP meets about 4 per cent. of United Kingdom electricity demand.
