HC Deb 06 December 1993 vol 234 c26W
Mr. Dunn

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport (1) on what date emergency telephones will be installed from Swanscombe to the Danson interchange on the A2; how many there will be; and at what distance apart;

(2) what consultations he plans with local authorities on the exact positions of emergency telephones along the A2 between Swanscombe and the Danson interchange.

Mr. Key

Tenders for the installation of emergency telephones on the A2 in Kent, from the M2—Three Crutches—westwards to the county boundary, were invited on 24 November. It is hoped to be able to start the work in mid-January, but full commissioning will not be possible until about a year later. The contract will provide for 14 telephones alongside each of the carriageways, 28 in total, spaced approximately one mile—1.6 km—apart.

In line with usual practice, local authorities are not being consulted on the positioning of the telephones, which is determined by the Department's spacing specification and roadside conditions.

We have no present plans to install emergency telephones along the length of the A2 within the London borough of Bexley between the county boundary and the Danson interchange.
