Department of Health medical and dental work force census
Notes:
- 1. All figures are independently rounded to the nearest 10 whole-time equivalents.
- 2. The decrease in nursing and midwifery numbers is almost entirely due to Project 2000 learners who are not included in the work force.
- 3. Nursery and midwifery figures exclude agency nurses and medical and dental figures exclude locum doctors.
- 4. The increase in general and senior managers is mainly due to the extension of those terms and conditions to other staff groups.
- 5. The increase in administrative and clerical staff is largely due to the strengthening of administrative functions, and increased support for clinical services.
- 6. The figures for all regions include both directly managed units and NHS trusts.
- 7. The figures for others include the London ambulance service, family health service authorities and other statutory authorities.
- 8. Some totals differ from those given in my reply to the hon. Member on 4 November at column 457 where figures for the South Yorkshire paramedical services have been transferred from the Yorkshire to Trent region and NW Thames and RHA figures have been adjusted to include the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire ambulance service.
