HC Deb 03 December 1993 vol 233 cc769-70W
Mr. Milburn

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will list the total salary costs for(a) administrative and clerical staff, (b) managerial staff and (c) nursing and midwifery staff employed in the NHS in each year since 1989.

Mr. Stewart

[holding answer 25 November 1993]: The information is set out in the table. Details have been taken from health boards' annual accounts. General and senior managers costs are not separately identified but are included within the administration and clerical staff category. Costs are at outturn level and therefore increases are explained in part by annual pay awards. The figures for 1992–93 are provisional.

Year Administration and clerical (£000's)1 Nursing and midwifery (£000's)
1989–90 130,055 778,921
1990–91 152,546 834,093
1991–92 175,718 910,326
1992–93 191,979 925,130
1This figure includes those senior nurses and clinicians who have transferred to general/senior manager pay scales, particular in latter years.
