Ms Short

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment how many people(a) are currently on a course which has been supported by a career development loan, (b) are repaying a career development loan, (c) have had recovery action taken against them because they have defaulted on the loan and (d) have had to defer repayments on their career development loan because of hardship for each region and for Great Britain as a whole; what is the average amount of loan taken out; and if he will make a statement.

Information by region on the number of people currently in training supported by a career development loan—CDL—and the number of people currently repaying a loan is shown in the table.

Details of the number of people who have had recovery action taken against them because they defaulted on the loan are not available.

No information is held on the number of trainees who have had to defer repayment on loans due to hardship.

At the end of October 1993, the average loan amount for loans taken out in the current financial year was £2,812.
