Mr. Hinchliffe

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security what are the most recently available figures to show the cost of benefits paid to unemployed persons(a) male and over 60 years, (b) male aged 55 to 60 years and (c) female aged 55 to 60 years.

Unemployed people may receive any or all of the following major benefits: unemployment benefit, income support, housing benefit, council tax benefit and family' credit. They may also receive help with NHS charges. The amount of all benefits paid to unemployed people is not kept according to age grouping and cannot be obtained.

The latest statistics relating to the numbers of claimants for the two most common of the major benefits—UB and IS—for the age and sex groups specified in the question, are given in the tables.
