HC Deb 02 December 1993 vol 233 c656W
15. Mr. Hain

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will make a statement about progress towards peace in Northern Ireland.

16. Dr. Wright

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will make a statement on the progress of the peace initiative.

Sir Patrick Mayhew

The Government's objective for Northern Ireland is peace, properly attained. All the Government's policies have this objective. The people who can deliver an end to violence are the paramilitaries and they should do so immediately. But enduring peace will be assisted by a political settlement, which we continue to seek with the constitutional parties and, where appropriate, the Irish Government.

21. Mr. Charles Kennedy

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what prospects he sees for further peace talks in the Province; and if he will make a statement.

Sir Patrick Mayhew

I refer the hon. Member to the answer I gave the hon. Member for Birmingham, Northfield (Mr. Burden) earlier today.

18. Mr. Hunter

Sir Patrick Mayhew

I refer my hon. Friend to the answer I gave the hon. Member for Birmingham, Northfield (Mr. Burden) earlier today.
