HC Deb 02 December 1993 vol 233 c719W
Mr. Hinchliffe

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security what was the value of payment recovery, resulting from awards of compensation and other similar moneys to claimants, for each year from 1988.

Mr. Scott

The provision of statistical data concerning the amount of monies recovered under the compensation recovery scheme is a matter for Mr. Michael Bichard, the chief executive of the Benefits Agency. He will write to the hon. Member.

Letter from Mr. M. Bichard to Mr. David Hinchliffe, dated 1 December 1993: As Chief Executive of the Benefits Agency I am responsible for answering questions on relevant operational matters. I am therefore replying to your recent Parliamentary Question to the Secretary of State for Social Security, asking what was the value of payment recovery, resulting from awards of compensation and other similar monies to claiments, for each year from 1988. Under the Compensation Recovery provisions, only benefits payable from 1 January 1989 are recoverable. The amounts recovered since that date are as follows:

Period Amount recovered £ million
3 September 1990 to 31 March 1991 3.7
1 April 1991 to 31 March 1992 25.3
1 April 1992 to 31 March 1993 51.3
1 April 1993 to 31 September 1993 (first half of current financial year) 34.4
