To ask the Secretary of State for Health what action she is taking regarding overspending by general practitioner fundholders in the Doncaster area in respect of drug prescribing; and if she will make a statement.

Dr. Mawhinney

General practitioner fundholders nationally are proving to be extremely successful in improving the cost effectiveness of their prescribing and can vire between the elements of their budgets to achieve the most appropriate care for patients. Regional health authorities are responsible for managing the GP fundholding scheme in their areas.

To ask the Secretary of State for Health, pursuant to her answer of 29 November,Official Report, column 307, about general practitioner surgery in Liverpool, South Sefton, Knowsley and St. Helens and Wirral health authorities, how many of the general practitioners are fund holders; and how many fund holding general practitioners are in single-handed practices, in each of the four health authorities.
