§ Mr. Heathcoat-AmoryThe European Community—which was formerly the European Economic Community —continues in being and also includes the European Coal and Steel Community and the European Atomic Energy Community. Together, these Communities constitute one of the "pillars" of the Union. Government policy is to use the term "European Community" when describing matters specific to that pillar and to use the term "European Union" when referring to all three pillars collectively or to matters specific to the two intergovernmental pillars outside the Community.
