To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is his estimate of the total number of persons in custody in 1990, 1991 and 1992 who were(a) awaiting trial or (b) imprisoned in default of payment of fines.

Lewis to Mr. David Nicholson, dated 2 December 1993: Receptions of untried prisoners and fine defaulters The Home Secretary has asked me to reply to your recent Question about the total number of persons in custody in 1990, 1991 and 1992 who were (a) awaiting trial or (b) imprisoned in default of payment of a fine. Information for 1990 and 1991 was published in the 1991 edition of "Prison statistics England and Wales" (Table 1.14 of the 1991 edition, Cm 2157) a copy of which is in the library. Information for 1992 is only currently available from 1 January to 31 August 1992. During this period 35,689 untried prisoners and 13,308 sentenced fine defaulters were received into Prison Service establishments in England and Wales.
