Mrs. Dunwoody

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many crimes were recorded in Britain in 1992; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Maclean

There were 5,591,717 notifiable offences recorded by the police in England and Wales in 1992. The figures for Scotland are a matter for my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Scotland.

Mrs. Dunwoody

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how much was spent in 1991–92(a) in the criminal justice system on crime and (b) by the Home Office to prevent crime; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Charles Wardle

Public expenditure on the criminal justice system in England and Wales in 1991–92 was £8.7 billion. Of that sum, £5.4 billion was expenditure on the police, one of whose key functions is crime prevention. Estimated expenditure on all aspects of crime prevention was £167 million in that year, of which Home Office expenditure was £15.6 million.
