HC Deb 02 December 1993 vol 233 cc682-3W
Mr. Tom Clarke

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs how much of the funds that the British Government have committed to Cambodia in 1993–94 through the United Nations have actually been released; and how the funds have been disbursed.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

The Government have committed $1.2 million of financial assistance through the United Nations in 1993–94. We provided $1 million of budgetary aid to the United Nations Secrtary-General's fund to help meet the costs of civil administration in the interim period prior to the establishment of a constitutional Government. We have pledged $0.2 million to a United Nations development programme trust fund to enable the Cambodia mine action centre—CMAC— to continue mine clearance operations; expenditure arrangements are being finalised with the United Nations development programme.

We are also co-financing two on-going health projects with the United Nations through' UNDP. These are concerned with strengthening Cambodia's health systems, and controlling malaria and will cost an estimated £450,000 in 1993–94.

In addition, the United Kingdom contributes 6.373 per cent. on the United Nations scale of assessment to United Nations peacekeeping operations. The final calls for payment for the liquidation phase of UNTAC have yet to issue, but for the financial year 1993–94 the total United Kingdom assessed contribution is expected to be £17.59 million.
