Mr. McCartney

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what is the membership, and what are the terms of reference, of the task force established to examine activity on health promotion in the workplace.

The task force's membership was as follows:

  • Mr. T. M. Hogg (Chairman)—Director of Production Control for Nissan Motor Manufacturing (UK) Ltd.
  • Mr. T. Astill—Group Director, National Pharmaceutical Association.
  • Dr. M. Baxendine—Director of Medical Services, United Biscuits.
  • Dr. P. Davies—Health and Safety Executive.
  • Mr. J. Cridland—Director, Environmental Affairs, CBI.
  • Miss S. Dymott—Head of Occupational Health Nursing Services, Esso.
  • Ms S. Gooch—Chair of National Standing Committee on Health and Social Policy, Royal College of Nursing.

  • Dr. D. Miller—Consultant Occupational Physician.
  • Dr. M. O'Brien—President of Faculty of Public Health Medicine.

  • Ms I. Sharp—Director, National Forum for Coronary Heart Disease Prevention.
  • Ms S. Veale—Assistant Secretary, Equality and Social Policy TUC
  • Dr. D. Wright—Chief Medical Officer, British Petroleum plc and
  • Dean of the Faculty of Occupational Health Medicine.

The Departments of Health and Employment were represented. Dr. R. Smith, chairman of the Wellness Forum, participated as an observer.

The task force's terms of reference were: To review and assess past and current workplace activity and to advise on the development of health promotion in the workplace covering the five key areas of 'The Health of the Nation' White Paper, including health promotion campaigns and materials which can be used in the workplace, to provide regular reports to the Wider Health Working Group, including good practice, gaps in provision, and matters requiring attention.

The task force reported to the wider health working group in September, and copies of its report are available in the library. As recommended, a small steering group is being convened to take forward further work in this area.
