HC Deb 01 December 1993 vol 233 cc585-6W
Mr. Redmond

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if she will list the current designated disposal sites for sewage sludge dumping off the Yorkshire coast; how often these sites are reviewed; and if a map showing these sites can be(a) placed in the Library and (b) sent to the hon. Member.

Mr. Jack

The designated site off the Yorkshire coast for the dumping of sewage sludge is some 12 miles east of Spurn Head in an area bounded by the co-ordinates:

53° 35.00' N 30.00' E
53° 35.00' N 35.00' E
53° 30.00' N 35.35' E
53° 30.00' N 30.00' E

The site is located in deep water and its suitability for sewage sludge disposal is kept under continuous review in the light of the results of the regular monitoring programme. The monitoring results are published in the Ministry's aquatic environment monitoring report series. In March 1990 the Government announced that the disposal of sewage sludge at sea would cease at the end of 1998.

I have arranged for a chart showing the location of the disposal site to be placed in the Library and for a copy of this chart and the fourth report of the Marine Pollution Monitoring Management Group's Co-ordinating Group on Monitoring of Sewage Sludge Disposal Sites to be sent to the hon. Member.
