HC Deb 01 December 1993 vol 233 c623W
Ms Gordon

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the total amount of money to be allocated for the prison building programme.

Mr. Peter Lloyd

Responsibility for this matter has been delegated to the Director General of the Prison Service, who has been asked to arrange for a reply to be given.

Letter from Mr. Derek Lewis to Ms Mildred Gordon, dated 30 November 1993: The Home Secretary has asked me to reply to your recent Question about the money to be allocated to the prison building programme. Over the next three years a total of £620.3 million will be assigned to the prison building programme, as follows:

£ million
1994–95 1995–96 1996–97
251.4 223.1 145.8
The overall total includes nearly £43 million for the completion of the current prison building programme and the purchase of sites and infrastructure work for the programme of building six new prisons to which the Home Secretary referred on 6 October. The remaining £577 million will be spent on providing additional accommodation, repairs and modernising facilities in existing prisons.
