The Home Secretary has asked me to reply to your recent Question about the population of life sentence prisoners in Prison Service establishments.The latest available information is for 30 September 1993 and shows that there were 3,086 prisoners in Prison Service establishments in England and Wales serving life sentences, of whom 2,980 were men and 106 were women.
