To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many(a) men and (b) women held in prisons in England and Wales were serving a life sentence as of 19 November.

Responsibility for this matter has been delegated to the director general of the Prison Service, who has been asked to arrange for a reply to be given.

Letter from Mr. Derek Lewis to Mr. Tom Cox, dated 30 November 1993: The Home Secretary has asked me to reply to your recent Question about the population of life sentence prisoners in Prison Service establishments. The latest available information is for 30 September 1993 and shows that there were 3,086 prisoners in Prison Service establishments in England and Wales serving life sentences, of whom 2,980 were men and 106 were women.
