HC Deb 29 April 1993 vol 223 cc531-2W
Mr. Faulds

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will list all those vegetables of which he is aware which contain alkaloids; if he will indicate in each case the number of cases of harm to humans which have been recorded in the United Kingdom as a result of the consumption of those vegetables; if he will indicate in each case whether sales of products made from those vegetables have been banned; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Soames

Potatoes, aubergines, green and red peppers and green tomatoes contain glyco alkaloids. Figures are not collected centrally in the form requested. Local authorities have powers under the Food Safety Act 1990 to ensure that foodstuffs containing unacceptable levels of alkaloids do not enter the food supply.
