HC Deb 29 April 1993 vol 223 c513W
Mr. Rowlands

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales, pursuant to his oral statement on 1 April,Official Report, column 513, how many homes have been improved through enveloping and repairs in each of the last five years, and at what public cost within the area covered by the valleys initiative; and how many homes, and what public expenditure he estimates will be spent during each of the next five years.

Mr. Gwilym Jones

The numbers and cost of homes improved through enveloping and block/group repairs over the last five years are set out in the following table:

Year Numbers Cost £ million
1988–89 2,656 14.343
1989–90 2,749 12.716
1990–91 1,622 14.117
1991–92 367 3.943
1992–93 478 4.788
Totals 7,872 49.907

For 1993–94 I have made almost £3.3 million available specifically for area renewal schemes in the valleys area. Activity beyond 1993–94 will depend on the priority which local authorities give to area based renewal within the resources available to them.

The figures shown are exclusive of mandatory home renovation grant activity for individual homes.
